I have cabin fever! I need to get out of the house! We've had bitter cold, snow, and ice. I can't even walk outside without getting perma-chill. Anyway... it was a good week besides the freeze. My oldest daughter got her braces off and she has such a pretty smile! The two girls made little birdseed hearts to help the birds through this weather and they were rewarded with extra visitors to the yard. I knitted some smurfy hats and Lil' Miss started her "popcorn trees" for this summer. It's way to early for seeds and now I'm wondering how I'm going to keep all this corn alive until it can be transplanted into the garden.

Resolution

It's a simple concept, resolve to do something and do it, pretty straightforward. So why do I cringe at the word? Why is it the minute I make a resolution I set out to break it, if it's a New Year's resolution. I think it is quite possibly my strong dislike of schedules that causes the madness. The whole you will make resolutions on the 1st really annoys me. The year before last I outsmarted myself and made my resolution in November 2010. Guess what? I'm still keeping it! I know it's because it wasn't a scheduled January 1st resolution.

So here it is, middle of January, and I'm thinking a goal would be nice to go with that November 2010 one (that I will definitely continue, after all, now it's become a lifestyle and not a resolution). This year my middle of January resolution is to take one photo with me in it each month, that would be this month at the top of the post. There are literally under 20 photos of me from the years 1990-now, that is less than one a year and most of those are from last year. While I hate being in photos, I know it is important for my kids to be able to look back. Photos can reconnect you with things you would have otherwise forgotten.

A couple of days ago I was going through really old family photos and people long gone were brought back to me. With the photos of family I knew, I could hear their laughter and remember our stories together as if it was yesterday. With the photos of people I barely knew or didn't know at all, I was flooded with questions that I know I'll never get the answers to. I'll never know what card game Great Grandma was playing or what made her smile so big that her whole face lit up, or what bait Grandpa used to catch the fish that was worthy of a shutter click in those days when photos were so few. It was the little things, little lost answers. I don't want to leave my children, their children, the children beyond that with little lost answers. I don't want the phrase, "if only you could have seen her, you are so much like her" to be how I'm spoken of and remembered, leaving someone else to wonder. Now, I know no one may ever go looking, no one may ever care but if they do, I want to leave them something to find.

One photo a month, that's not too daunting of a task.

Coconut Macaroons

Ingredients:

2 2/3 cups flaked coconut

2/3 cup sugar

1/3 cup all purpose flour

1/4 tsp salt

4 egg whites

1/2 teaspoon almond extract

2 ounces semi sweet chocolate

1/2 teaspoon shortening

Grease and flour a cookie sheet, preheat oven to 325 degrees. Combine coconut, flour, sugar, and salt in large mixing bowl. Stir in egg whites and almond extract. Drop by rounded teaspoonful onto cookie sheet and bake 20-25 minutes until edges are golden brown. Cool on wire rack. Melt shortening and chocolate together and drizzle with a fork over cooled macaroons. Enjoy :)

I haven't wrote in a while and I thought perhaps I should. It seems I have fallen out of the habit of blogging, the rambling part of it at least. So, I figured I would just free write for a bit and see what comes out of it.
The warm golden sun has shifted to cool, as is always the case this time of year, and the trees have lost their fancy Autumn dress, nothing but bare branches remain. I am seeing less and less beautiful days, more grey and gloomy ones which play on my mood. I bounce from baking and decorating to stay in pajama days, under the covers, and not wanting to look out until spring. This is strange for me, I love seasons, but this year I seem to be stuck in August and daydreaming of being back here:

We are not at the days of snow flying yet. It would be an improvement over just grey because I love snow. There was one day, this day:

where we had our first snow. It was short lived but prompted the beginning of our seasonal decorating. The girls put up their special pink Christmas tree together,

and I started decking the halls

It's coming along. I should be done before Thanksgiving... I hope.

I'm happy to say I have been scrapping a bunch of pages again! The weather has kept me indoors so when I need a break I play in photoshop. I can't believe how much I missed it over the summer. I'm also back to drawing. I have a Christmas kit in the works that is quickly becoming my favorite kit. Every day I'm adding more to it and I have to say it may be to blame for those pajama days because once I start playing with it, I have a hard time getting up to do anything else.

I can't believe Thanksgiving is in eight days! I cook the dinner every year and I'm always so organized. This is the one area in my life, the holidays, that I actually make lists, schedules, and have a definite plan of attack. This year, as I may have mentioned, my mind is on a beach somewhere :) I haven't even made the menu, not that it's difficult, I mean... let's see, it will include turkey and all the trimmings... there done lol! At this rate, we'll be sitting down to a bucket of chicken from Kentucky Fried Chicken and saying pass the sporks. No, I will eventually make a menu. I'm just not willing to accept that the holidays are upon us yet. There was a time when I had all my Christmas shopping done by Thanksgiving, to avoid the crowds, but not this year. I haven't even started. I don't even have lists! Instead of humming Christmas carols I'm singing Toes by the Zac Brown Band. I have a couple of weeks before Christmas songs need to take over, right? There is at least a few days before the holiday insanity gets to grab hold and shake the sand from my hair, right?

We go for walks, long walks, and at every bench we pass she always stops and has a seat and looks. She is brilliant! This is a fun little kit for fall. I wanted to do something different than the Halloween and tradition fall kits and as I was trying to figure out what that could be I heard quite the racket outside. There were crows in the corn making so much noise that it sounded like they were having a party in the garden. I could just picture them dancing around the pumpkins, playing instruments, and having a really good time. So, Crows Jamboree came into being. I hope you have a fun time creating with it and the little birds dance their way across your layouts!

Today I scrapped for the first time really in over a month. I used to scrap 2 or 3 pages a day. I would scrap while having coffee in the morning, scrap during the littlest's nap time, and scrap in the night when I couldn't sleep. But now, the littlest doesn't nap any more which makes me tired enough to sleep at night and forces me to really work for those cups of coffee in the morning. The coffee isn't just because I love it anymore, it has become necessary. Today though, I did scrap. I felt rusty and totally out of practice, at odds with the elements, and couldn't help thinking how weird that was. What was once simply done without much thought now feels uncoordinated. By my fourth page, I did feel like it was coming back to me some which is nice because it is one of my quiet hobbies and with school starting soon I'll need something to do between 5:30am and 8ish when the Lil' Miss wakes up. Anyway, it had me thinking, is it like riding a bike? Once you can ride can you always ride, once you can scrap can you always scrap... naturally, beautifully?

I don't want it to end, summer that is. It has been one of the best I can remember. Yeah, I know, my memory isn't all that great and I probably think this every year but for the first time I can remember I am actually clinging to a season. School supplies are in the store adds, commercials on tv, schedules to be picked up and my mind is screaming NO! I know lots of parents look forward to school days but me, I dread it. I wish vacation could last longer and not be ending in just a couple of weeks

This place, the blog that is, will really need some fall cleaning when I get back. I do believe there are cobwebs in the corners and one or two spiders lurking about. I didn't plan to disappear for the summer but I suppose some of the best plans aren't plans at all and I have disappeared.

We just gathered our kids and have went out, no place in particular, just out. We loaded up the car with food, grabbed gas for the boat, and left. This is summer as it should be. There's no schedules, no deadlines, and at times I even shut off the cell phone. Do you remember the days before cell phones, when the people you were actually with got your undivided attention, uninterrupted by a ring tone? I recall it, vaguely, and I'm actively working to restore those days :)

I do miss blogging though. I miss writing, designing, hearing from those of you that write back but at the same time I'm glad to have this summer, this vacation with just my family having fun together. So, I suppose, when the summer sun goes down I'll have some cleaning to do but I wouldn't miss these days for the world.

I'm actually hoping for an Indian Summer this year which is strange since Autumn is usually my favorite season. I guess, I just don't want it to end. It's probably a good thing that I live where we have all the seasons, without winter I would never get anything done at all.

I had 2 goals for this year design wise. One was to do a kit you could scrap boys with, Lil' Greenie, and the other was to do a kit that you could scrap your ancestors with. The next kit, Remember, meets my second goal. It's a bit vintage, a touch grungy, and can work with any photo from Grandmas to little boys. I'm hoping to finish it in a week or so and thought it would be a good time to give you a little glance at what is coming up.

For those of you wondering if I've lost my whimsical side with this next kit, I promise I'll get back to the business of making nonsense again soon :)

This is where I'm going today. We found this spot a few days ago and I have been dreaming of getting back there ever since. You can't drive to it, so I'm hoping it becomes our secret place where we can spend days relaxing by the water.

On a side note, I have been working on a new kit for you, really, I haven't abandoned the blog. It's slow in coming but that's just the way I am when those blue skies and puffy white clouds start appearing. Look at that photo, can you blame me? Let's see, when the options are go there or stay indoors and design... well with me there's an obvious winner. So I design, scrap, sew etc... on rainy days instead of every day. I hope you all are out enjoying the weather too and that those of you in the other hemisphere are having a beautiful fall and mild winter sipping hot chocolate with whipped cream.

Thinking Happy Thoughts

So, here I sit in my little world, super sick, coughing up a lung, and stuck in the middle of the week. A week, by the way that has been rainy. What's a girl to do? I'm thinking happy thoughts. I'm trying to come up with 10, just 10, reasons not to be upset with my current circumstances.

1. Spring can't wait much longer, I mean, it's almost May already.
2. yellow, that's it, just yellow, it's a happy color and I'm liking it
3. my favorite early flowers are blooming, Muscari, or as we call them in my little world Fairy Bells

4. the kids are well and haven't caught my wretchedness

5. Veggie gardening. Lil' Miss' tomato plants that she started from seed are getting huge and I'm kind of wanting a veggie garden again this year even though I promised myself I wouldn't. It would be my first year in eleven without one and I think I would miss it. Even canning is sounding fun... dare I?

6. fabric, ruffles, old lace, hand stitching

7. I finished all of my scrappy challenges this month. I thought for sure I wouldn't and I was pretty upset with me about it but in the last days I've done it. Yay! My favorite of all the pages was a lift of our dear JetjeZ. Her page is found here. I wont post the pic because I haven't gotten permission and I'm crazy about not swiping images.

8. Cadbury Eggs. I have some stashed just for me for when I get over this illness. They're my little secret and I plan to eat each one when I'm all alone and can enjoy it without little pouting eyes wanting to take them, they have their own so I feel no guilt... really...none. Ok, maybe I feel a little and that's why I'll eat them alone but I deserve a little indulgence too.

This year I've decided to branch out a little. Along with my normal style I'm attempting to add some boy friendly kits. Most of my designs are pretty girly because that's what I love to do but I've felt as though I'm neglecting the boys which is bad since I have 2 of them that need pages for their albums as well.

So, Lil Greenie whispered in my ear, "my turn" and he was born.

He's a sweet little alien who likes to have fun and secretly has a bit of a crush on Pinky (I had to make a girl alien too, my youngest daughter demanded it). Greenie's best friend is Bluey, who is shy and a bit passive aggressive and, as luck would have it, is also secretly in love with, you guessed it, Pinky. You would think this would be a problem but the 3 of them get along quite well, mostly because Pinky is oblivious to both boys preferring to just dance and play with her dolly. Now Bluey, quiet as he is, has a tendency to sneak up on Greenie and playfully zap him with his ray gun then speed off in his zoomie craft. Greenie doesn't seem to mind though because as soon as Bluey flies away he has Pinky all to himself. He is quite a charmer but realizes it's just easier to get her attention when the competition is somewhere several miles above their heads. I know, grade school romance on Planet 5, so much drama for these youngsters.... Anyway, I thought it would be nice if they could be introduced to some more children, help take the pressure off the situation a little and broaden their horizons. They are, after all, such good little aliens just looking for some new friends to play with. I hope some of you out there know of some nice children to come on Lil' Greenie's playdate. Oh, and Pinky will be serving tea but, well, I wouldn't drink it because she doesn't actually know how to make tea... and honestly, I've seen the leaves of the plants on planet 5 and I really don't think they're safe to consume. It's just a friendly warning...

Spin Me A Yarn...

There's a certain amount of delirium that comes with being home and sick in the winter. You become trapped in the comforts of your own walls. The mind starts to wander and make fictions far more interesting than reality ever could be. You spin yarns.... Today is a spinning day. We sit here crazed in our boredom telling a story that starts with a simple sentence until it becomes a living thing. An hour goes by and the story still progresses until we truly wish it had been video taped to sit back and laugh at on a later date. To this point we have been to a mountain top, jungle, and ocean. We have bobbed for fish while starving and surrounded by fruit trees, been trapped in a tent during a tornado while Mother Nature lifted us up, encountered crazy villagers, and tried to harness the powers of electricity in a thunderstorm that occurred in -15 degree temperatures. Oh yes, it's a spinning day here and the yarn goes on and on. I never know where we'll end up next.

Winter Time Dreams

It's January, and though it has actually gone by quite quickly I feel like saying, it's January still. These are the days when time seems to drag, the weeks before those first signs of spring and I'm so over the beauty of snow. This is not to say a fresh dumping wouldn't be lovely or icy branches or giant flakes of snow drifting ever so slowly downward... but it's not happening, nothing interesting is happening. It's just gray skies and muddy snow. So, I spend time daydreaming. I'm planning my gardens for this spring, deciding what seeds to start next month in (hopefully) sunny windows. I have decided not to do the huge vegetable garden this year, a decision I may regret in June or July when I'm missing grocery shopping in my yard. Instead, this year, I'm letting the ground rest there and entirely focusing on the flowers. I plan to spend all of my gardening time on bringing my flower gardens to a new level. They've been neglected a bit since the little one was born, merely weeded and ignored. The plants need care, a little pruning, and a lot of love; outdoor spaces need reclaimed or created, pretty little nooks in which to waste a day. I'm actually hoping that this year the little one will be able to help like her big sister does. This year perhaps she will remember that roses have thorns and lilies once picked are gone forever and no amount of water from a tiny watering can will make them bloom again. I actually have daydreams of the three of us flower shopping in sun-dresses, smiling, laughing, carrying baskets full of flowers in a soft golden glow, bringing them home and piling them on the deck then sitting amongst them while sipping iced tea as it catches the light in our glasses, like we're drinking in the sun itself... I get wistful this time of year and a little lost in my winter time dreams.

Will I watch it go by as just another year, a continuation of yesterday, or lasso it with invisible threads and drag it fearlessly into uncharted territory? What will the new year bring? I don't make resolutions. They seem to set me up for failure. If I say I want to eat healthier, I grab chocolate. If I say I want to spend more time doing yoga, I find an enchanting book that I can't tear myself away from. But, each year at the stroke of midnight, I kiss each child and my husband for superstition claims that what you are doing in that first minute of the new year is how you will spend the entire rest of the year. I like my year set up for love, my family close, and a smile on their faces. What will you be doing that first minute of the new year?

I haven't wrote in a while and my soul seems to miss the openness of words flowing out like ripples. I never know where those ripples will go but hopefully they beach at other understanding hearts. It is November, those few, precious, empty days before the Thanksgiving planning and cooking begin, and Christmas shopping gets well underway. The quiet before the storm. The leaves have nearly all fallen and days have turned gray keeping me indoors looking out. This leaves me time for sneaking up decorations. Winter decorations, I call them, to avoid the criticism of bringing out the Christmas ones too early but we all know what they are. The label just makes it more acceptable. There is winter greenery, winter berries (I didn't even have to make those up), winter village... it's only Christmas when Santa and his sleigh show up, and winter wreaths. The sun has somewhat abandoned me so I have to find new ways to throw some light around the house and glittery things do reflect pretty little lights after all. Winter decorating, it's acceptable right?

Week 43

Week 43, gorgeous fall color that is almost completely gone now due to high winds and tornadoes that moved through the area. Lil' Miss asked for her wings and wanted to be a garden faerie yesterday and the hunt for a Halloween pinata ended successfully. All in all, a good week and we're all looking forward to the weekend.

P.S. The next template set is almost ready. I will probably release it after Halloween as this is a very busy time for me.

It was such a crazy week, kind of like a roller coaster ride. We were sick, not sick, sick again. The weather was freezing, warm, freezing again. Hmmm... those are probably related and now that I type it out it seems kind of obvious. It's funny how looking back on weeks like this is so enlightening. This was the last week of beautiful leaves because in the week we're in now high winds have blown them all from the branches.

It was a sad week as the first of the season's colds settled into our house but with the help of good docs and good medicine we have moved past it and are doing our best to get back into the swing of things. We do not want to miss any of this autumn's beauty or fun!

It was a slow week, filled with appointments for the previous week's injury and the current week's illnesses. The leaves are fully turned and falling from the trees becoming a lush carpet of gold easily raked and jumped in and autumn flowers are filling out the gardens nicely making me glad I got out there to cut back the spring and summer ones. I am still waiting on that last English rose to bloom.

I was going to wait until October 1st to release Harvest Time, since it's my favorite month. I told myself be patient, it's less than a week away. Could I wait? No! So, let's just pretend I did. Today I'd like to share with you a kit all about the magic of the season. It's the changing leaves and dried plants whispering in the wind, it's acorns and the scurry of tiny creatures gathering, Autumn rains, pumpkins and squash, all leading up to Halloween when anything can happen. The kit has 20 papers and 135 elements of Autumn goodness packed into it. So, happy Autumn, happy harvest, and happy haunting to you!
